CA 15-3 (Cancer Marker)
Cancer antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3) is a protein (antigen) generated by cells in response to a number of changes within the body. This antigen is classified as a tumour marker because elevated levels may signal the presence of certain cancers, such as breast cancer (but also pancreas, liver, lung and ovary) and also a number of non cancerous conditions. It is important to understand that CA 15-3 tests are not used for diagnosing cancer as there are too many possible causes for an elevated result. The level may help evaluate how a cancer is responding to treatment, but if unexpectedly high in someone not known to have had cancer may trigger further investigation. Generally, variations in CA 15-3 levels assist cancer specialists in determining whether a tumour is stable, growing, shrinking, or has returned.
